ORIGINALLY LOOKING AT IMAGERY INSPIRED BY PINK FLOYD, I MOVED ONTO LOOKING AT THE IMPACT OF THE IRA AND THEIR SURPRISING INFLUENCE ON ALTERNATIVE MUSIC AT THE TIME. I WANTED TO RESPOND IN A CREATIVE AND BOUNDARY-CHALLENGING WAY TO HOW MUSIC HAD BEEN AFFECTED BY SPECIFIC POLITICAL AND CULTURAL EVENTS.
THIS PROJECT SAW ME WORKING WITH MORE UNCONVENTIONAL MATERIALS LIKE RESIN AND WATERCOLOUR PAINTS AND OIL. I WORKED WITH MATERIALS TO INCORPORATE MY AUDIO-VISUAL SYNESTHESIA INTO MY PRACTICE. FOR THIS, I MIXED RESINS AND SWIRLED THEM IN RESPONSE TO WHAT I SAW IN THE MUSIC.
AFTER MOVING AWAY FROM THE PINK FLOYD WORKS, I WANTED TO CHANNEL A STRONG POLITICAL NARRATIVE WHILST ALSO TRYING TO KEEP THINGS RELATIVELY LIGHT-HEARTED. I SAW A DYNAMIC LINK BETWEEN THIN LIZZY AND THEIR MUSIC REFERENCING THE TRAGEDIES CAUSED BY THE IRA ATTACKS AND HOW IRISH INDEPENDENCE WAS A BIG INFLUENCE IN SOME OF THE RECORDINGS. THIS IS WHERE I DECIDED TO MAKE AN ELECTRIC GUITAR THAT HAS ALL THE WORKING FUNCTIONALITY OF ANY OTHER INSTRUMENT, BUT WITH HAUNTING IMAGES OF IRA MEMBERS ON THE BACK TO PROVIDE AN EVOCATIVE ELEMENT TO THE NARRATIVE.
